Wherever you are in the world, here’s wishing you a happy International Women’s Day! The theme this year is about ‘building a gender-balanced world’, with a view to ‘driving a better working world’. That’s something I can certainly support. How about you?
According to the International Women’s Day website, ‘gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive’. They encourage collective action and shared responsibility, so that we all participate and contribute in our own way, within our sphere of influence.
For my part, I’ve witnessed plenty of gender imbalance in terms of how we react to being on camera. During my 15 years of pro photography and videography experience, I’ve seen repeatedly how women struggle when facing a camera, generally much more than men. Our approach to being filmed and photographed is typically more intimately considered, incorporating way more involvement, emotion, adjustments, analysis and review.
Women may not always be more camera shy than men, but we definitely tend to care more about the detailed outcome of our shoots, and we often present significantly more stress in the process. A wonderful man at one of my confidence on camera workshops once shared that he thought men may well be as camera shy as women but that they hide it better.
Either way, there are also more details for us to attend to, in relation to our hair styles, make-up and outfits in particular, as well as a different variety of poses that work for us.
